Changed 4 gallons of water every week, about 7 to 8 percent of the water volume. This seemed to have a less stressful effect on the creatures than say a 20% monthly change. I always used RO water for this and topping up evaporation. I never had any readings for Nitrites, Nitrates, Ammonia or Phosphates, so I guess the regime worked for me. I suppose the clown fish found the water good enough for breeding too. I also had some bubble algae which I understand requires very good water quality. I used Tropic Marin Bio Calcium to keep the calcium level up, rather than a calcium reactor. Would have been tricky to use a calcium reactor in a tank this size. Emptied the skimmer cup weekly. It really smells horrible, and this is one job my wife refused to do. Cleaned the glass once very two days, risking attacks from the female maroon clown fish ! Never had a UV steraliser, but i certainly would on a larger aquarium. In all I got the weekly maintenance to about 1 hour, which I think is a small price to pay for the privelege of having some of nature's most wondeful creations in your own home.
